“A critic is a legless man who teaches running”

A critic is a legless man who teaches running
Channing Pollock

“A critic is a man who knows the way but can’t drive the car.”
Kenneth Tynan (English theatre Critic, 1927-1980)

“It is better to be making the news than taking it; to be an actor rather than a critic”
Winston Churchill

I guess as leaders we can bank on two truths.

1) Criticism
2) And criticism changing the leader

I have been “schooled” a lot as of late and it is by no means all bad. Actually, I consider myself fortunate to have leaders I turn to for Spiritual, Mental, and Physical “criticism.” I have learned and grown from their inputs…but some critics have different motives.

Unhappy people tend to attack the point person.
So…how do we handle the criticism (both positive and negative)?

Consider the way leaders should handle criticism:

1) Understand the difference between constructive and destructive criticism
2) Look beyond the criticism to see the critic
3) Guard your own attitude toward the critic
4) Keep yourself spiritually in shape.
5) Wait for time to prove the critic wrong
6) Concentrate on your mission: Change/work on your mistakes

“It behooves every man to remember that the work of the critic, is of altogether secondary importance, and that, in the end, progress is accomplished by the man who does things.”
Theodore Roosevelt
