“He who lives without discipline dies without honor.” Icelandic Proverb
It would appear that discipline is one of those things in that the minute you might believe you have it… you have lost it. It is a life’s pursuit. I can not help but harken back to a quote attributed to Margaret Thatcher… something like… being a lady is much like being a leader…that minute you have to tell someone you are… you are not.
So how is your self discipline? I have pasted several quotes here, another… Plato said “The first and the best victory is to conquer self.” If you want to be a leader with self-discipline, follow these John Maxwellian action points:
1: Develop and follow your priorities (of course the assumption is you have thought and developed a few personal priorities)
2: Make a disciplined lifestyle your goal
3: Challenge your excuses.
4: Remove rewards until you finish the job.
5: Stay focused on results.
NEVER trade what you want at the moment for what you want most!
A few more disciplined leader quotes:
“It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.” Buddha
“What it lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not do.” Aristotle
Unless you change how you are,you will always have what you’ve got.
Jim Rohn
“First we form habits, then they form us. Conquer your bad habits or they will conquer you.”
Rob Gilbert
“The great end of education is to discipline rather than to furnish the mind; to train it to the use of its own powers, rather than fill it with the accumulation of others.” Tyron Edwards
“No man or woman has achieved an effective personality who is not self-disciplined. Such discipline must not be an end in itself, but must be directed to the development of resolute Christian character.” John S. Bonnell
“If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self.” Napoleon Hill
People create their own success by learning what they need to learn and then by practcing it until they become proficient at it.
Brian Tracy
“No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No stream or gas drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined.” Harry Emerson Fosdick
“The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline.” Bum Phillips
“A colt is worth little if it does not break its halter.” Proverb
“Nothing of importance is ever achieved without discipline. I feel myself sometimes not wholly in sympathy with some modern educational theorists, because I think that they underestimate the part that discipline plays. But the discipline you have in your life should be one determined by your own desires and your own needs, not put upon you by society or authority.”
Bertrand Russell
Great post. It’s easier for us to see a lack of discipline in others than it is to see in ourselves. I am constantly, silently reminding myself to be disciplined, it’s not always easy but it is important.
You read my mind… agree 100%. Always working on getting better…interesting when people might comment on being disciplined in an area… I have to ponder–if you only knew how much work and how deliberate I have to be to even come close to getting these things done.
