Disruptive Leadership by Brian Kibby

My wife always tells me that I “love to hire the crazies.”

Yes. I do. They change the world.

There has never been a more exciting time to compete and to do business in our world than today—opportunities, new technologies, competitors, and threats are everywhere!

Therefore. Disruption! It’s impossible to create disruptive advantage without hiring disruptive talent. This is the essence of disruptive leadership.

If you want your enterprise to thrive (survival is uninteresting and a road to ruin in the end) then you must hire the disruptors and their wonderfully disruptive (in a good way) brains.

I am not suggesting general anarchy where nothing gets done and everyone runs around with hair afire. However, nothing is or should be sacred except core ethical and cultural values. Outside of that, challenge it all!

Here are a set of questions I ask every leader to determine their taste and talent for creative disruption BEFORE they are hired. If it helps you, pay it forward.

Tell me about the most disruptive thing, in a good way, that you’ve done in the past year? What were the results?

– Tell me a story about how you’ve challenged business and cultural norms within the past year?

– What were the results?

– Tell me a story about how you’ve challenged your boss in the past year? What were the results?

– Tell me a story about how you’ve made people curious about you and your leadership in the past year?

– Tell me about the most exciting thing you’ve done in the past year?

– Tell me how your best friend would describe you?

Listen very closely to the answers and you’ll know if you have a disruptive (in a good way) TALENT and leader on your hands. When you find them, hire all of them!

If not now, when?
