Explanation and Motivation

Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites…he shall be chief and captain…” Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and clled it that City of David. – 2 Samuel 5: 8-9

Another piece of Maxwellian wisdom from this mornings reading… in this world of rapid change and discontinuities, the leaders MUST be out front to encourage change and growth and to show the way to bring it about.

Mangers usually are more skilled in the technical requirements of change, whereas leaders have a better understanding of the attitudinal and motivational demands that the followers need. Note the difference: In the beginning the skills of a leader are essential. No change will ever occur if the psychological needs are unmet. Once change has begun, the skills of a manger are required to maintain needed change.

A good exercise when you face change is to make a list of the logical advantages and disadvantages that should result from the change, and then make another list indication the psychological impact. Just seeing this on a sheet of paper or computer screen can be enlightening and clarifying.

  1. I’m curious, and would like you to expand on the idea of the advantages and disadvantages. Normally, I would imagine there are a certain set of disadvantages that will always persist, the ever-present psychological resistance to change itself being one. Would you recommend this to anyone in an organization experiencing change?

    1. Clint: I believe you are right there will always be a certain set of disadvantages.  Is your question would I recommend looking at the disadvantages before a change or would I recommend bringing those to light?  Probably a good idea to bring them out in public for a couple reasons
      1) transperancy is important
      2) it illustrates how you as a leader think and process info for your folks.
      3) further it will allow others to possibly pile on… good to know the pros and cons before a decison is made… we do this a lot in the OG with leadership decisions.  Bring in the OSS, ARS and OG CD to discuss pros and cons… in the end, they all understand it is the commander’s decision, but I have been “schooled” by all the above.

Psychological issues: yes… resistance, but what about you as a leader?  When are you unveiling this change?  If you just showed up… might be too early?  You might be telling folks something that you don’t intend to.

Not sure I have your question correct… expand if I missed it.

      Thanks for the comment Clint
