Authentic leadership is much more than competent management. Managers who attain the level of authentic leadership are those who are the vision holders for the organization.
They possess five key qualities that guide them in the workplace:
1. Trustworthiness–Great leaders are honest, reliable, and stand by their beliefs, even when it is difficult to do so.
2. Moral compass–This internal sense of what is right and wrong is key.
3. Caring service–True leadership stems from serving others, not ego.
4. Courage–This is required when making tough decisions that support the organization.
5. Wisdom–Intelligence, combined with the knowledge that comes from experience and reflection, is important for authentic leadership.
Managers should think about their current approach to leadership and try to incorporate these skills into their daily interactions with employees. It is also important to follow the light side of leadership by allowing all employees to take an active role in the organization. They caution against being influenced by the dark side of leadership, which is motivated by personal gain, power, and control.
The great leaders possess five attributes:
1. They are comfortable with who they are. They act authentically and with confidence. They live leadership.
2. They offer inspiring vision. They tap in to employees’ desires to be part of something bigger than themselves.
3. They bring out the best in others. By offering feedback and nurturing their employees’ talents, authentic leaders produce results.
4. They can be both leaders and followers. They are less concerned with “title” and more concerned with collaborating and meeting the needs of the moment.
5. They are resilient. They hold on to the vision in the face of challenges and use setbacks as opportunities for growth.
