Sound & Vision

“I will sit right down, waiting for the gift of sound and vision
And I will sing, waiting for the gift of sound and vision
Drifting into my solitude, over my head”

“Don’t you wonder sometimes
’bout sound and vision” – David Bowie

Listening to Dave… Dave Bowie this AM, I could not help just to sit and ponder “Sound and Vision.” Vision is so important and I am consitantly amazed at how many leaders believe that a vision is nothing but fluff. Without a challenge, many people tend to just fade away and lose focus. Charles Nobel noted: “You must have a long range vision to keep you from being frustrated by short term failures.”

Vision helps people stay motivated, gives direction, and provides a beacon for decision making. That can be especially important with/for highly talented people. They sometimes fight a lack of desire when focus is foggy or blurred. That’s why great artists like Michelangelo prayed, “Lord, gran that I may always desire more than I can accomplish.: A visionary compass answers that prayer.

Someone said that only people who can see the invisible can do the impossible–clearly illustrating the value of vision. But it also indicates that vision can be elusive. If you can see a vision for your team or organization, than your team has a reasonably good chance at success. Vision gives members direction and confidence, two things they cannot do without.
